80 Series Knuckle Rebuild Symptoms Benefits

The front steering knuckles on an 80 Series Land Cruiser carry the weight of the truck, steer the front wheels, and protect the birfields (CV joints) inside. They're packed with grease and sealed off from dirt and water, but those seals and bearings don't last forever. At 4X4 Rides, we recommend rebuilding the knuckles about every five years to keep your Land Cruiser steering, stopping, and driving the way it should.

Over time, the knuckle seals dry out and crack, and the grease inside breaks down. Once the seals go, dirt and water get in, the grease gets pushed out, and the trunnion bearings, wheel bearings, and birfields start to wear. Catching it early with a routine rebuild every five years or so is far cheaper than replacing worn birfields, spindles, or bearings later. It also keeps your steering tight and your front brakes free of grease.

We take the front axle knuckles apart, clean everything, and inspect the birfields, spindles, and trunnions. Then we replace all the seals and bearings, including the knuckle seals, inner axle seals, trunnion bearings, wheel bearings, gaskets, and felts. We set the trunnion bearing preload correctly with new shims and repack the knuckles with fresh grease.
