Start with maintenance fundamentals: cooling-system service, belts, fluids, hoses, brakes, and rust inspection. Prioritize cooling-system health, suspension bushings, steering components, charging systems, and transmission cooling based on use. A documented baseline makes every later modification safer and easier to diagnose.

 

The 4.7L 2UZ-FE V8 in the 100 Series Land Cruiser and Lexus LX 470 is one of the best engines Toyota has ever built. It's smooth, makes strong low-end torque for towing and off-road driving, and it's known for running well past 300,000 miles. With the right maintenance, this engine will keep going for the life of the truck.

The most important maintenance on the 4.7 V8 is the timing belt and water pump. We recommend replacing both about every 100,000 miles. The timing belt wears with age and mileage, and if it fails the engine stops running and can leave you stranded. The water pump sits behind the timing belt, so it makes sense to replace them together and save on labor. A worn water pump can leak or fail, overheating the engine. Done on schedule, it keeps the 4.7 V8 running strong for the next 100,000 miles.

 

 

The 100 Series came from the factory with plastic heater hose tees at the back of the engine. Over time, heat makes them brittle, and when they crack the engine can lose coolant quickly and overheat. We replace them with durable metal heater tees. It's an inexpensive upgrade, and it's easy to do at the same time as the timing belt and water pump.

The heater tees are tucked behind the engine near the firewall, which is why many owners don't know they're there until one fails.
